Who are the Baale?
There are three clans within the Suri people: the Tirma (those in Tulegit
where the Haspels are); the Chai (who live in Kibbish) and the Baale (who live
farther away). The Tirma and Chai speak basically the same language. The
Baale language is different. There is much movement and also some intermarriage,
so a few Baale people live at Tulegit. When one family offends another, the
recompense made is often giving the offended family a girl. So some Baale
women live among the other Suri, etc.
In the last couple of years, the Suri Project has expanded its ministry to
reach the Baale people. A small school (one room) has been built in Moga and
40-50 Baale boys attend. A small clinic has also been built there now.
